Media, including dating <a class=\"basics-link\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at self-help\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/basics\/self-help\">self-help<\/a>\u00a0literature, has played a big part in this, encouraging women to change various aspects of themselves\u2014<a class=\"basics-link\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at personality\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/basics\/personality\">personality<\/a>, physical appearance, communication style\u2014to be more desirable to men.\r\n<div class=\"markup-replacement-slot markup-replacement-slot-1\" data-slot-position=\"1\"><\/div>\r\nIn my work, I've seen this social programming impact women in their pursuit of dating and relationships, time and time again, leading many to feel like they must \u201cplay the game\u201d to be \u201csuccessful\u201d and find a mate. And of course, this outdated approach often leaves single women feeling hopeless and disempowered.\r\n<div class=\"markup-replacement-slot markup-replacement-slot-2\" data-slot-position=\"2\"><\/div>\r\nBut there is a shift occurring, and it is palpable\u2014and this is not strictly an outcome of the surge in dating app usage. As women have gained more rights and are recognized as (mostly) equal to men, traditional\u00a0<a class=\"basics-link\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at gender\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/basics\/gender\">gender<\/a>\u00a0roles and constructs are becoming obsolete.\r\n\r\nIn the past, most women needed men for resources\u2014they needed a provider. Now, with more opportunities, women have more independence and recognize that they do not need men in the same way women did in previous generations. Without such high stakes, women are raising the bar. We are no longer looking for a provider but a partner and an equitable relationship. We want more.\r\n<div class=\"markup-replacement-slot markup-replacement-slot-3\" data-slot-position=\"3\"><\/div>\r\n<h3>10 Things Women Want<\/h3>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>We want to treat as equals.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to feel seen and heard.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want our feelings to be respected and validated.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to feel safe and support.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to share core values with our partners.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to have the flexibility of having multiple identities instead of being confin to one box (i.e., \"wife,\" \"mom,\" \"<a class=\"basics-link\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at caregiver\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/basics\/caregiving\">caregiver<\/a>\").<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to be part of the conversation regarding negotiating roles and expectations within the relationship.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to have productive and honest conversations and healthy disagreements.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to establish mutual trust.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>We want to feel emotionally connected to our partners.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<div class=\"markup-replacement-slot markup-replacement-slot-4\" data-slot-position=\"4\"><\/div>\r\nNow, more than ever, women are becoming aware of their inherent worth and are not willing to settle. The expectations are simple and straightforward.
