In the north are basalt knolls and high plateaus; in the northwest are the wooded sandstone hills of the Spessart. The northwest is drained by the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Main-River\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Main River<\/a>, which flows into the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Rhine-River\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Rhine<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">To the southeast the\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/topography\" data-term=\"topography\" data-type=\"MW\">topography<\/a>\u00a0varies from the stratified land formations of Swabia-Franconia to shell limestone and red marl, the hill country of the Franconian-Rednitz Basin, and the limestone mountains of the Franconian\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Jura-Mountains\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Jura<\/a>\u00a0along the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Danube-River\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Danube<\/a>, which divides Bavaria north and south.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">On the eastern edge of Bavaria are the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Bavarian-Forest\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Bavarian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Bohemian-Forest\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Bohemian<\/a>\u00a0forests, and in the north is the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Franconian-Forest\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Franconian Forest<\/a>. South of the Danube is a plateau upon which lies the capital, Munich, and beyond it are the\u00a0<span id=\"ref168535\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Bavarian-Alps\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Bavarian Alps<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Bavaria\u2019s share of the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Alps\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Alps<\/a>\u00a0consists of wooded peaks of several thousand feet, behind which rise steep ridges and high\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/plateaus\" data-term=\"plateaus\" data-type=\"EB\">plateaus<\/a>\u00a0(in the west, the Allg\u00e4uer Alps; in the east, the Alps of Berchtesgaden). They reach their highest point with the 9,718-foot (2,962-metre)\u00a0<span id=\"ref168536\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Zugspitze\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Zugspitze<\/a>, which is also the highest point in Germany. The majority of Bavaria\u2019s inhabitants still live in small towns. Only about one-fifth live in cities of 100,000 or more. Munich is the third largest city in\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Germany\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Germany<\/a>\u00a0and the largest city in Bavaria.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">After\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/World-War-II\" data-show-preview=\"true\">World War II<\/a>\u00a0there was an influx of refugees from the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Sudetenland\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Sudetenland<\/a>\u00a0and eastern\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Europe\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Europe<\/a>, where many ethnic Germans had lived for centuries. A significant proportion of Bavaria\u2019s population at the beginning of the 21st century was composed of those refugees and their descendants. In the early 21st century, most Bavarians were Roman Catholics, and Evangelical Lutherans were the second largest religious group.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">About two-fifths of the state\u2019s gross output in the early 21st century consisted of industrial and handicraft products. The G\u00e4uboden Plain, a fertile farming\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/basin\" data-term=\"basin\" data-type=\"EB\">basin<\/a>\u00a0along the southern bank of the Danube, is known as the granary of Bavaria. Rye, wheat, and\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/plant\/barley-cereal\" data-show-preview=\"true\">barley<\/a>\u00a0take up about half of the farmland; much of the rest is planted with other grains and feed crops.
