Toponymy<\/span><\/h2>\r\nKnightsbridge is an ancient name, spelt in a variety of ways in Saxon and Old English, such as Cnihtebricge<\/i> (c. 1050); Knichtebrig<\/i> (1235); Cnichtebrugge<\/i> (13th century); and Knyghtesbrugg<\/i> (1364). The meaning is \"bridge of the young men or retainers,\" from the Old English cniht<\/i> (genitive case plural \u2013a) and brycg<\/i>. Cniht<\/i>, in pre-Norman days, did not have the later meaning of a warrior on horseback, but simply meant a youth.\r\n\r\nThe allusion may be to a place where cnihtas<\/i> congregated: bridges and wells seem always to have been favourite gathering places of young people, and the original bridge was where one of the old roads to the west crossed the River Westbourne<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup> However, there is possibly a more specific reference to the important cnihtengild<\/i> ('guild of cnihtas<\/i>\u2018) in 11th-century London and to the limits of its jurisdiction (certainly Knightsbridge was one of the limits of the commercial jurisdiction of the City of London<\/a> in the 12th century).\r\n

It also extended into the parishes of Kensington<\/a> and Chelsea<\/a>. It was therefore divided between local authorities from a very early time.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nIn the time of Edward I<\/a>, the manor of Knightsbridge appertained to the abbey of Westminster.[7]<\/a><\/sup> It was named after a crossing of the River Westbourne<\/a>, which is now an underground river<\/a>.
