And as of 2012 had approximately 300 shops. It designated as part of the <a title=\"A40 road\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A40_road\">A40.<\/a> It is\u00a0 a major road between <a title=\"London\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\">London<\/a> and <a title=\"Fishguard\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fishguard\">Fishguard.<\/a>\u00a0 Though it is not signed as such, and traffic is regularly restricted to buses and taxis.\r\n\r\nThe road was originally part of the Via Trinobantina.\u00a0 A <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Roman road\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_road\">Roman road<\/a> between <a title=\"Essex\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Essex\">Essex<\/a> and <a title=\"Hampshire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hampshire\">Hampshire<\/a> via London. It\u00a0 known as <a title=\"Tyburn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tyburn\">Tyburn<\/a> Road through the <a title=\"Middle Ages\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_Ages\">Middle Ages<\/a> when it was notorious for public <a title=\"Hanging\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanging\">hangings<\/a> of prisoners at <a title=\"Tyburn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tyburn#Tyburn_gallows\">Tyburn Gallows<\/a>. It became known as Oxford Road and then Oxford Street in the 18th century, and began to change from residential to commercial and retail use by the late 19th century, attracting street traders, confidence tricksters and prostitution. The first <a title=\"Department store\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Department_store\">department stores<\/a> in the UK opened in the early 20th century, including <a title=\"Selfridges\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selfridges\">Selfridges<\/a>, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"John Lewis (department store)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lewis_(department_store)\">John Lewis &amp; Partners<\/a> and <a title=\"HMV\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMV\">HMV<\/a>. Unlike nearby shopping streets such as <a title=\"Bond Street\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bond_Street\">Bond Street<\/a>, it has retained an element of downmarket trading alongside more prestigious retail stores. The street suffered heavy bombing during <a title=\"World War II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>, and several longstanding stores including <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"John Lewis (department store)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lewis_(department_store)\">John Lewis &amp; Partners<\/a> were completely destroyed and
