{"id":3541,"count":1,"description":"Colonel <b>David Collins<\/b> (3 March 1756 \u2013 24 March 1810) was a <a title=\"British Marine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Marine\">British Marine<\/a> officer who appointed as Judge-Advocate to the new colony being established in <a title=\"Botany Bay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Botany_Bay\">Botany Bay<\/a>.\r\n\r\nHe sailed with Governor <a title=\"Arthur Phillip\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Phillip\">Arthur Phillip<\/a> on the <a title=\"First Fleet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Fleet\">First Fleet<\/a> to establish a penal colony at what is now <a title=\"Sydney\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sydney\">Sydney<\/a>. Afterwards he became secretary to the first couple of Governors, later Collins started a secondary colony where he founded the city of <a title=\"Hobart\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hobart\">Hobart<\/a> as the founding Lieutenant Governor of <a title=\"Van Diemen's Land\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Van_Diemen%27s_Land\">Van Diemen's Land<\/a> (later becoming the state of <a title=\"Tasmania\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tasmania\">Tasmania<\/a>).\r\n<h2><span id=\"Early_life_and_military_career\" class=\"mw-headline\">Early life and military career<\/span><\/h2>\r\nCollins\u00a0 was born 3 March 1756 in London, the third and oldest surviving child of Arthur Tooker Collins (1718\u20131793).\r\n\r\nWhen he was an officer of <a title=\"Royal Marines\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Marines\">marines<\/a> (later major-general) and Henrietta Caroline <span class=\"avoidwrap\" title=\"Name at birth\"><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"N\u00e9e\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/N%C3%A9e\">n\u00e9e<\/a> Fraser<\/span> (died 1807) of <a title=\"County Offaly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_Offaly\">King's County<\/a>, Ireland.<sup id=\"cite_ref-libraryireland_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Collins_(lieutenant_governor)#cite_note-libraryireland-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> His grandfather <a title=\"Arthur Collins (antiquarian)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Collins_(antiquarian)\">Arthur Collins<\/a> (1684\u20131760) was author of <i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Collins's Peerage of England\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collins%27s_Peerage_of_England\">Collins's Peerage of England<\/a><\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ADB_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Collins_(lieutenant_governor)#cite_note-ADB-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTECurrey20135_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Collins_(lieutenant_governor)#cite_note-FOOTNOTECurrey20135-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nThe family lived in <a title=\"Saffron Hill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saffron_Hill\">Saffron Hill<\/a>, London. Until 1765 when they moved to <a title=\"Devon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Devon\">Devon.<\/a> After his father as a lieutenant colonel\u00a0 made commandant of the Plymouth division of marines.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTECurrey201314_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Collins_(lieutenant_governor)#cite_note-FOOTNOTECurrey201314-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> He\u00a0 educated at <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Exeter Grammar School\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exeter_Grammar_School\">Exeter Grammar School.<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTECurrey201315_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Collins_(lieutenant_governor)#cite_note-FOOTNOTECurrey201315-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> Before at the age of 14 joining the marines as an <a title=\"Ensign href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_III\">George III<\/a>'s sister <a title=\"Caroline Matilda of Great Britain\"
