It operates hotels in a variety of locations including city centres, suburbs and airports competing with the likes of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Travelodge UK\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travelodge_UK\">Travelodge<\/a> and <a title=\"Ibis (hotel)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ibis_(hotel)\">Ibis<\/a> hotels.\r\n\r\nThe company established by <a title=\"Whitbread\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whitbread\">Whitbread<\/a> as <b>Travel Inn<\/b> in 1987, to compete with <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Travelodge UK\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travelodge_UK\">Travelodge<\/a>. Whitbread bought <b>Premier Lodge<\/b> in 2004 and merged it with Travel Inn to form the current business under the name \"<b>Premier Travel Inn<\/b>\", which\u00a0 shortened to \"Premier Inn\" in 2007. Premier Inn accounts for 70% of Whitbread's earnings.\r\n<h2><span id=\"History\" class=\"mw-headline\">History<\/span><\/h2>\r\nThe chain started trading in 1987 as Travel Inn. The first site to open was next to \"The Watermill\" <a title=\"Beefeater (restaurant)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beefeater_(restaurant)\">Beefeater<\/a> restaurant in <a title=\"Basildon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basildon\">Basildon<\/a>.\r\n\r\nIn 2004, <a title=\"Whitbread\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whitbread\">Whitbread<\/a> acquired another hotel chain, Premier Lodge, for \u00a3536\u00a0million.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Premier_Inn#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> This added 141 hotels to the portfolio. Whitbread renamed every hotel \"Premier Travel Inn\".<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Premier_Inn#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nIn 2005, Premier Travel Inn opened its 500th hotel in <a title=\"Hemel Hempstead\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hemel_Hempstead\">Hemel Hempstead<\/a>.\r\n\r\nIn early 2006, Premier Travel Inn purchased 11 <a title=\"Holiday Inn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holiday_Inn\">Holiday Inn<\/a> hotels in England and Wales. These sites kept their leisure facilities such as a swimming pool and gym, except the hotel situated at <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Norman Cross\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norman_Cross\">Norman Cross<\/a>. Premier Travel Inn started to launch a new bedroom design during this year to move away from the differences of \"Travel Inn\" and \"Premier Lodge\". Until then rooms had remained as they had been before and new hotels were designed as \"Travel Inns\".\r\n\r\nWhitbread shortened the name to \"Premier Inn\" in 2007;<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Premier_Inn#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> by 2009 the business accounted for more than 70% of Whitbread's earnings.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Premier_Inn#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nIn September 2007, Whitbread announced the purchase of Golden Tulip UK including six hotels trading in the UK under the Tulip Inn and Golden Tulip brands. The hotels were converted to Premier Inns.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Premier_Inn#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nIn April 2008, Whitbread announced a \u00a3100\u00a0million expansion of Premier Inn in London over the following three years.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Premier_Inn#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nIn July 2008, Whitbread bought 21 <a title=\"Holiday Inn Express\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holiday_Inn_Express\">Express by Holiday Inn<\/a> hotels in exchange for 44 Beefeater &amp; Brewers Fayre restaurants where it was not possible to build a
