Details himself being tricked to go to <a title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, where he was kidnapped and sold into <a title=\"Slavery in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery_in_the_United_States\">slavery<\/a> In the <a title=\"Deep South\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deep_South\">Deep South<\/a>. He was in bondage for 12 years in <a title=\"Red River Parish, Louisiana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_River_Parish,_Louisiana\">Louisiana.<\/a> Before he able to secretly get information to friends and family in New York. Who in turn secured his release with the aid of the state. Northup's account provides extensive details on the <a title=\"Slavery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery\">slave markets<\/a> in Washington, D.C. And <a title=\"New Orleans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\">New Orleans<\/a>, and describes at length cotton and sugar cultivation and slave treatment on major plantations in Louisiana.\r\n\r\nThe work\u00a0 published eight years before the <a title=\"American Civil War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\">Civil War<\/a> by <a title=\"James Cephas Derby\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Cephas_Derby\">Derby &amp; Miller<\/a> of <a title=\"Auburn, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auburn,_New_York\">Auburn, New York.<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-derby1884_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twelve_Years_a_Slave#cite_note-derby1884-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> Soon after <a title=\"Harriet Beecher Stowe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harriet_Beecher_Stowe\">Harriet Beecher Stowe<\/a>'s best-selling <a title=\"Novel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Novel\">novel<\/a> about slavery. <i><a title=\"Uncle Tom's Cabin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uncle_Tom%27s_Cabin\">Uncle Tom's Cabin<\/a><\/i> (1852), to which it lent factual support. Northup's book, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dedicate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dedicate\">dedicated<\/a> to Stowe, sold 30,000 copies, making it a <a title=\"Bestseller\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bestseller\">bestseller<\/a> in its own right.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Summary_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twelve_Years_a_Slave#cite_note-Summary-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nAfter being published in several editions in the 19th century and although later cited by specialist scholarly works on <a title=\"Slavery in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery_in_the_United_States\">slavery in the United States<\/a>, the memoir fell into public obscurity for nearly 100 years.
