Thus dissolving the <a title=\"Marriage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marriage\">bonds of matrimony<\/a> between a married couple under the rule of law of the particular country or state.\r\n<h2><strong>Legal process<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nDivorce laws <a title=\"Divorce law by country\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divorce_law_by_country\">vary considerably<\/a> around the world.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Britannica_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divorce#cite_note-Britannica-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> But in most countries, divorce requires the sanction of a court or other authority in a legal process. Which may involve issues of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Distribution of property\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Distribution_of_property\">distribution of property<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Britannica2_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divorce#cite_note-Britannica2-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> <a title=\"Child custody\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Child_custody\">child custody<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Britannica2_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divorce#cite_note-Britannica2-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> <a title=\"Alimony\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alimony\">alimony<\/a> (spousal support). <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Child visitation \/ access\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Child_visitation_\/_access\">Child visitation \/ access<\/a>, <a title=\"Parenting time\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parenting_time\">parenting time<\/a>, <a title=\"Child support\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Child_support\">child support<\/a>, and division of debt. In most countries, <a title=\"Monogamy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monogamy\">monogamy<\/a> is required by law. So divorce allows each former partner to marry another person.\r\n\r\nDivorce is different from <a title=\"Annulment\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annulment\">annulment<\/a>, which declares the marriage null and void. With <a title=\"Legal separation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Legal_separation\">legal separation<\/a> or <i><a title=\"De jure\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_jure\">de jure<\/a><\/i> separation (a legal process by which a married couple may formalize a <i><a title=\"De facto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_facto\">de facto<\/a><\/i> <a title=\"Marital separation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marital_separation\">separation.<\/a> While remaining legally married) or with <i>de facto separation.<\/i> (A process where the spouses informally stop cohabiting). Reasons for divorce vary, from sexual incompatibility or lack of independence for one or both spouses to a <a title=\"Personality clash\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personality_clash\">personality clash<\/a> or <a title=\"Infidelity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Infidelity\">infidelity<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divorce#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\r\n\r\nThe only countries that do not allow divorce are the <a title=\"Philippines\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippines\">Philippines<\/a> and the <a title=\"Vatican City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vatican_City\">Vatican City<\/a>. In the Philippines, divorce for non-Muslim Filipinos is not legal unless the husband or wife is an <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Undocumented immigrant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Undocumented_immigrant\">undocumented immigrant<\/a> and satisfies certain conditions.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divorce#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> The Vatican City is a state ruled by the head of the Catholic Church, <a title=\"Christian views on divorce\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_views_on_divorce#Roman_Catholic_Church\">a religion that does not allow for divorce<\/a>. Countries that have relatively recently legalized divorce are <a title=\"Italy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italy\">Italy<\/a> (1970), <a title=\"Portugal\"
